6 Ways Americans Are Disrespecting Their Flag Without Consequences

Last Updated on

At a campaign rally in Alabama on Friday, U.S President Donald Trump accused U.S. athletes of not respecting America. He said that players who take a knee during national anthem are openly disrespecting the American flag.

Over the weekend, he posted a pair of tweets:

“If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect our Great American Flag (or country) and should stand for the National Anthem. If not, YOU’RE FIRED.”

But have you ever wondered what happened to the Americans who disrespect the flag every day without consequence? Where was President Trump’s outrage then?

Twitter user @Koopa_Kinte went through the federal code put in place on June 14, 1923, dictating how the flag should be treated and posted a thread featuring many of the everyday ways in which people mistreat the flag.

Here are a few of those mistreatments.

#1 “The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free.”

#2 “The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.”

#3 “The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.”

#4 “It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard.”

#5 “The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever.”

#6 “No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations.”
