The Best Age to Have Children, According to Scientists

Last Updated on

Motherhood is not an easy decision. In fact, most women who decide to become a mom put some serious thought into it before taking the step. What may seem mature at 25 may not be quite so in reality. So, what is the right age for women to have children?

There’s a common notion that pregnancy after the age of 35 years is risky for both mom and child. But, many women feel safer and more mature to handle motherhood in their late 30s or even in their 40s. And science agrees with them. New studies have revealed that it can be beneficial to have children after 35 years.

Previous research has proven that the life expectancy increases when a woman becomes a mother after she turns 35 years. There’s new research conducted by The University of Southern California proving that women becoming first-time moms after they turn 35 years have better mental capabilities. Let’s see why!

Better performance

830 menopausal women were the subject of this study. These women were tested in the areas of planning, visual perception, verbal memory, concentration, and attention. The results showed that women who had their last baby after 35 years were better in verbal memory and recognition. Those women who had their first baby after the age of 24 years performed better in analytical problem solving, verbal skills, and mental acuity tests. Those who became mothers between the ages of 15 and 24 years scored less.

Possible reasons

The reasons why women having children after the age of 35 years are sharper may be related to the hormonal spike. When estrogen and progesterone increase during pregnancy, it has a positive impact on the brain function, especially when the pregnancy occurs at a later age.

It is, however, strongly recommended that women should consult their doctor and carry out all possible tests. Such tests would ensure they are at the right age to have a safe and healthy pregnancy and delivery.
