Physical Characteristics of Goldendoodles

Cute dog with toy- best dog food for Goldendoodles guide

Goldendoodles are a very active breed.  You will usually find them jumping and sprinting all around—they have so much energy.

Because they are a crossbreed, it is often difficult to pinpoint their exact weight and size as it varies, depending on the size of their parent breeds.

However, generally speaking, there are three different sizes of Goldendoodles: miniature, medium, and standard.

1. Standard Goldendoodle Weight & Size

The standard Goldendoodle weighs from 45 pounds up to more than 100 pounds.

2. Medium Goldendoodle Weight & Size

The medium Goldendoodle, as the name suggests is medium-sized and weighs about 30 to 45 pounds.

3. Miniature Goldendoodle Weight & Size

The miniature Goldendoodle weighs about 15 to 30 pounds and is the smallest of the three sizes.

Goldendoodles Calorie Requirements

Goldendoodles Calorie Requirements

The actual caloric requirements of Goldendoodles vary according to your dog’s age, medical condition, metabolism, weight, lifestyle and even whether they have been spayed or neutered.

According to the National Research Council of the National Academies, on average, an adult Goldendoodle needs around 1,212 calories every day.  But this number actually applies to Goldendoodles that weigh about 45 to 50 pounds and have an active lifestyle.

Growing puppies need more calories as they have faster metabolisms and are in the process of developing. A four to 12-month-old Goldendoodle puppy would require approximately 933 Kcal per day. On the other hand, senior dogs are less active and need fewer calories compared to other life stages.

Feeding Guidelines for Goldendoodles

Feeding Guidelines for Goldendoodles

Goldendoodles don’t do well with free feeding. So, leaving out food in their bowls is a bad idea, as it leads to digestive problems. You should set a fixed schedule for their meal times. This helps with weight management and allows you to keep track of their eating behavior.

Never feed your Goldendoodle one big meal with all its caloric requirements in one go. This can cause bloating or gastric torsion commonly seen in Goldendoodles.

Goldendoodles are especially susceptible to stomach issues and unfortunately, their offspring can inherit this as well. To avoid this problem, feed your Goldendoodle several small meals throughout the day.

Feeding Schedule for Goldendoodles

Initially, puppies need to be weaned before they can start having commercial puppy food. This is usually when they are eight to 12 weeks old. At this stage, Goldendoodle puppies should be fed three to four times.

At the end of six months, you need to reduce the number of meals and caloric intake. An adult Goldendoodle should be fed no more twice a day. Depending on their size, your dog should be getting one to four cups of dog food daily.

The amount of food you serve also depends on the quality of your dog food. The better and higher end the brand, the more nutrient-dense it is. So, you don’t have to serve as much for these brands as you would for budget ones.

Common Goldendoodle Health Issues

Golden doodle with vet- best dog food for goldendoodles

Goldendoodles are a special breed because they’re a cross between Poodles and Golden Retrievers. So, they are prone to the same health issues that their parent breeds suffer from.

The average Goldendoodle will live between 10 and 14 years, with proper care, exercise, and diet. How the dog has been bred also plays an important role in their health condition.

Here are some common health issues that Goldendoodles usually suffer from:

1. Bone and Joint Problems

Goldendoodles are genetically susceptible to developing hip dysplasia and luxating patellas. Hip dysplasia occurs when the ball and socket joint of the hip is not properly formed. It can be quite severe and painful.

Characterized by a “bunny hopping” symptom, hip dysplasia can actually lead to lameness and arthritis. Luxating patella is a condition where the dog’s knee cap gets dislocated. This is also quite painful and may cause mobility problems.

The treatment of both of these problems surgery, braces and pain medication. An important part of prevention and pain management is also weight management. If your Goldendoodle is heavy, they will exert more pressure on those already vulnerable joints.

The Goldendoodle’s diet should also contain calcium, phosphorus and Vitamin D to keep their bones healthy and strong. The right food will ensure the right blend of nutrients to keep your Goldendoodle’s weight in check.

2.Skin Problems

Goldendoodles are prone to skin problems like Sebaceous adenitis. Sebaceous adenitis is a hereditary disease which causes inflammation of the sebaceous glands. It will make your Goldendoodle’s coat hair brittle, dull and matted.

There will also be severe itching, odor and hair loss.

Treatment for this disease involves immunosuppressants and anti-inflammatory drugs. A good diet with Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids as well as necessary vitamins and minerals will also help to maintain your Goldendoodle’s skin and coat.

3. Eye problems

Goldendoodles tend to suffer from eye conditions like progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts.

Progressive retinal atrophy occurs when the retinal cells get destroyed, causing blindness. Cataracts form when the lens of your dog’s eye becomes blurry. Severe cases may also lead to blindness.

These conditions may happen when Goldendoodles are very young, but it may also happen at later stages as well. While cataracts can be treated with surgery, there is no treatment for progressive retinal atrophy.

However, to prevent these conditions, diet can play an important part. You should be on the lookout for dog food containing carrots, blueberries, salmon, sweet potatoes, Vitamin C and E.  These ingredients help to maintain eye health for dogs.

Ingredients to Look Out for in Goldendoodle Dog Food

Ingredients to Look Out for in Goldendoodle Dog Food

The ideal Goldendoodle dog food will have the following ingredients:

1. Protein

A Goldendoodle’s diet needs to be enriched with plenty of protein. This ensures that they develop lean and healthy muscles. Protein also provides the necessary amino acids that enable your dog’s body to deal with wear and tear.

In dog food, there are usually two types of protein – meat based and plant-based.

2. Meat Protein

The best kind of dog food for Goldendoodles should have high protein content. And good quality dog food will always have protein sources from premium quality meats.

Meat protein can come from chicken, beef, fish, turkey, and lamb. Keep in mind that whatever meat protein there is, it should always be listed in the first three ingredients.

Sometimes protein can be listed as a meat meal. This is also a good source as it’s concentrated meat, although lacking in terms of water content.

Plant Protein

Plant protein is found in a lot of high-end dog food. This is because it’s very easy to digest and increases the protein content. Common types of plant protein include lentils and peas, which can also sometimes be found as the top ingredients.

So, if you see a really high protein content, it might be because of a mixture of both. Ideally, high-quality dog food will contain more meat protein than plant protein. This can easily be understood by looking at the label on the back of the packaging.

3. Fat

Dog food also needs to have a high-fat content, but it must be the good kind of fat.  Fat is the main source of energy for dogs. It provides double the energy compared to proteins and carbohydrates.

The common types of “good fat” ingredients for dogs include chicken and fish fat, as well as vegetable oils like canola oil and flaxseed. This type of fat also contains Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids which are essential for maintaining your dog’s canine skin and coat health.

Omega 3s are also known to help with blood clotting and lessening inflammation. DHA is a type of Omega 3 which is needed for healthy brain and eye development. This is especially important for Goldendoodle puppies when they’re in their peak growth stage.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are immediate sugar sources that provide a lot of energy. They will help keep your Goldendoodle’s blood sugar levels in check. It is also a source of fiber that helps with canine digestion.

However, dog food should not contain complex carbohydrates as they can be hard to digest. In fact, the carbohydrate content should actually be lower than the fat and protein content.

Ideally, the carbs present should be simple and low glycemic. Good carbohydrate sources in your Goldendoodles dog food can include sweet potato, barley, oats, and even rice.

4. Vitamins

Vitamins are an essential part of a Goldendoodle’s diet. The right blend of vitamins is beneficial for your dog’s body to function properly. Some important vitamins for dogs are Vitamin A, D, E, K, C, and B.

Most Vitamins can be commonly found in vegetables and meats. Here are some of the roles vitamins play in keeping your dog healthy:

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is excellent for the eyes and helps maintain your dog’s skin and coat health. It is found in animal products like liver, fish and some vegetables.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E provides antioxidants for your dog’s body and helps to strengthen their immune system.  This vitamin is found in meat and green leafy vegetables.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is not something dogs can produce naturally from the sun as humans do. However, it’s extremely important for their health as it helps to absorb calcium and keeps the teeth and bones healthy. You can buy supplements containing Vitamin D, but be sure to follow the guidelines carefully as an overdose can be toxic for dogs.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps the immune system and is important for many metabolic reactions in the canine body. It is also needed for maintaining healthy joints.

Vitamin Bs

Vitamin B1, B3, and B5 are needed for your dog’s overall wellbeing.  B1 keeps the heart, muscles and nervous system in check while B3 helps digestion and energy conversion processes. B5 is also important for your dog’s metabolism.

5. Minerals

Minerals are also key components of a Goldendoodle’s diet. The three main minerals dog food for Goldendoodle’s should have are calcium, phosphorus, and zinc.

Calcium and phosphorus are needed for bone development, especially in puppies. These two minerals have to be present in a specific ratio of 1.2 parts calcium to one part phosphorus.

Both of these minerals need Vitamin D to be absorbed. If there is a lack or excess of these minerals, there might be serious bone complications for your dog.

As for zinc, this is found in meat and liver. This is necessary for keeping your dog’s nails, hair and skin looking good. It is also an antioxidant that helps the immune system.

Toxic Food Ingredients for Goldendoodles

To give your Goldendoodle the best possible diet and to ensure their well-being, you need to know what ingredients to avoid. Here is a list of the common things that will identify low-quality dog food:-

1. Unnamed Meat and Meat Meals

Meat should be the key ingredient for your dog’s food. However, if you see the words “meat”, “meat meal” or “meat and bone meal”, you should keep your Goldendoodle away from that food.

These unspecified sources of meat might come from dead animals or even expired meat in grocery stores. This is just a cheap addition to increasing protein content and can be harmful to your dog.

2. Soy and Corn

Soy isn’t an essential ingredient in dog food. It contains a lot of amino acids, but it does more harm than good. The same goes for corn.

Soy and corn are hard to digest and is often the culprit behind bloating and gas. Since they are also common allergens, it’s best to avoid this ingredient completely.

3. Chemicals and Artificial Preservatives

BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole), BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) and Ethoxyquin are preservatives added to dog food. PG (Propylene Glycol) is a moistening agent that is usually added to kibble that claims to be soft.

However, these are all toxic chemicals that may cause cancer. Dog food should not have any preservatives at all. But if they do, natural preservatives like Vitamin C and E are much safer than these chemicals.

4. Food Dyes

Blue 2, Red 40, Yellow 5 and 6, and 4-MIE are common food dyes used in dog food. But these are also known carcinogens and add absolutely no nutritional value to your dog’s food.

5. Corn Syrup

Corn syrup is a common ingredient in cheap dog food to make it taste good. However, it contains no nutrients whatsoever and is filled with a lot of addictive sugar. Corn syrup is basically a gateway to obesity and diabetes and should be avoided at all costs.

6. Rendered fat

Rendered fat is usually used to add flavor to kibble. However, it also contains microorganisms like salmonella and toxins such as heavy metals which are harmful to your Goldendoodle.

Buyer’s Guide for Goldendoodle Dog Foods

To buy the right food for your Goldendoodle, you need to know what to look for. Here are a few tips to help you make an informed decision:

Which Type – Wet, Dry or Raw?

Ideally, the rawer the food in a dog’s diet, the better. A raw diet is believed to contain more nutrients, strengthen the immune system and fend off diseases. However, if your dog is old or has a sensitive stomach, it’s best to stick with homemade or commercial food.

Wet food is a tasty option for your Goldendoodle, and is loved by even the pickiest of eaters. However, it is not the healthiest for their teeth, nor is it very convenient. Dry food, on the other hand, is a more popular option as it is easy to store.

Dry food comes in kibble that is packed with nutrients. It helps to remove plaque from your dog’s teeth and also keeps its breath smelling fresh. The best option, however, is to alternate between wet and dry food, while adding in raw meat to your Goldendoodle’s diet occasionally.

Age Appropriate Food

What dog food you buy for your Goldendoodle will vary according to their age. This is because their bodies, lifestyle and medical conditions change as they get older.

For example, Goldendoodle puppies need high protein and fat-rich diets. This encourages muscle growth. Their food should also contain more calcium, phosphorus, Vitamin D, and DHA. These elements support the development of strong bones and joints as well as proper brain formation in growing puppies.

Special food formulas are available for puppies, adults, and senior dogs. You also have the option to feed your dog “all life stage” food, which is not specified for any age range. This is okay as long as your dog is getting all the right nutrients.

Managing your Goldendoodle’s Weight

Goldendoodles, like all other dogs, are prone to obesity. It is well known that an obese dog is never healthy. Obesity leads to lots of other severe health conditions which are much more difficult to treat.

Always keep your Goldendoodles weight under observation and get regular check-ups at the vet. If your dog is overweight, your vet will set a specific diet plan to tackle the problem.

There are also a lot of dog foods that specifically cater to help manage weight. All you have to do is follow the instructions on the package to know the feeding schedules and amounts.

What About Goldendoodles with Allergies and Sensitive Stomachs?

Goldendoodles can also suffer from allergies and sensitive stomachs. This is why it’s important to be careful with what you feed them. If you notice symptoms of allergic reactions or sickness, immediately take your dog to the vet.

The first step is to identify what exactly is causing the problem. This may be done by lab tests as well as by eliminating certain foods from your dog’s diet. Once you have a list of the allergens, make sure to keep an eye out for them in the ingredients list so that you can avoid them.

Typically, food with limited ingredients are the best options for dogs with sensitive stomachs or allergies. There’s also plenty of chemical free, gluten free and grain free options on the market. If your dog is allergic to something as common as poultry, then you can even opt for other flavors like beef.

Kibble Size Matters

Kibble sizes may vary with each type of food. Generally speaking, smaller Goldendoodles do better with small kibble sizes while standard Goldendoodles need larger kibble sizes.

Goldendoodle puppies should be given small kibble as it’s easier for them to chew and digest. As your Goldendoodle grows up, their teeth and digestive system will also develop. They will prefer larger kibble pieces and will also be able to break them down easily.

Senior dogs will also need a change in kibble size. At their age, they might have digestive issues and dental problems so small kibbles would be more appropriate.

Good Taste and the Right Texture

To get dogs to eat healthily, you also need to keep in mind that they have a specific taste palate. But this is not much of a problem because nowadays, dog food is available in all sorts of flavors.

Flavor is usually determined by the protein source. It can be chicken, turkey, lamb, duck, beef, or even salmon. Sometimes these meats may be roasted or there might be added pieces apple or rice.

The texture of the food will also pique your dog’s interest. Having crunchy kibble with soft morsels of meat is ideal as it makes eating fun and tasty experience for your dog.

However, in the pursuit of taste, don’t forget that the ingredients should also be easy on the stomach. The food should be easy to chew and swallow, and made from simple easily digestible ingredients.

The Cost and Quality Relationship

Dog food can be high-end and expensive, moderately priced or cheap. Generally speaking, the more expensive brands have better quality ingredients that are packed with more nutrients.

Cheaper foods tend to have more fillers and excessive ingredients. They focus more on quantity, rather than quality. It’s common to see that the protein content in premium dog food is higher than others, sourced from real farm-raised animal meats.

This doesn’t mean that all budget dog food is bad. There are actually some good quality dog foods that are easy on the pocket. You just have to keep an eye on the ingredients and know what to choose.

Dog Food Safety

When you buy commercial dog food, make sure to do your research first and check all of the reviews. There are some well-reputed, trusted brands that have stringent safety standards. These are the dog foods you should usually go for.

Good quality dog food is always usually sourced from local, trusted farms and lab tested for safety as well. However, when buying dog food, packaging is also a big issue.

Never feed your dog any food that has arrived in open packaging. Always check the storage instructions on the food package as well. Contaminated food could make your Goldendoodle severely ill. Certain dog foods come in resealable bags, which is ideal for keeping the food fresh.
