Many of us have dreamed of owning a castle and living like royalty.
Well, Italy is making your dream come true!
The State Property Agency of Italy is giving away 103 dilapidated villas, inns, castles and other properties for free! Anyone interested can build their own versions of Hogwarts, Winterfell, or The Emerald Castle!
However, there is only one condition – The State Property Agency expects that anyone with the free castles (or any of the other 103 properties) has to restore the place so that it can be used as a tourist destination. The choice is open – hotel, spa, restaurant or whatever fits the owner’s whims!
“The project will promote and support the development of the slow tourism sector,” Roberto Reggi from the State Property Agency told the media. “The goal is for private and public buildings which are no longer used to be transformed into facilities for pilgrims, hikers, tourists, and cyclists.”
The Agency hopes that it will help free the overcrowded and popular tourist spots, e.g Venice and Milan.
The last day to submit applications is June 26. Selected applicants will get a 9-year period to complete the project. There is a possibility of extension for another 9 years depending on the situation.
No worries if your application is denied. Italy plans to restore 200 objects within the next two years the same way.
