How to Impress Someone on a Virtual Date

These days, more and more people are dating online using various apps and websites. Whether you are dating in Illinois with locals that match your interests, or you are in a big city like New York and you’re looking for love, you might be meeting your dates virtually before meeting them in person. Perhaps you are doing it because you don’t have a lot of time to go with your friends, you want to expand your reach to find new people with ease, or you just want to avoid the risk of contracting the coronavirus, dating online is the norm now.

Despite its many benefits, dating online can make things a little more complicated than usual, especially if you don’t know how to make a virtual date work. Thankfully, though, there are several strategies that you can implement so you can impress someone who’s on a virtual date with you. Get ready to video chat and have some fun!

Get Dressed Up

Sure, you might be sitting at home, but it is still worth getting dressed up, putting on makeup, and doing your hair for a virtual date. This shows your date that you are treating your virtual meetup just like a real, in-person one, and it also proves that you care about the way that you present yourself.

If you don’t bother even changing your outfit or combing your hair, you will likely come across as lazy and uninterested, and you definitely don’t want that. So, while you won’t need to worry about what shoes you’re wearing or the fragrance that you choose because your date won’t be able to smell you or see what shoes you have on, you should definitely make it a point to dress up and accessorize in other ways, at least from the waist up.

Get the Lighting Right

Believe it or not, lighting has a huge impact on how you look. It can bring out certain features that you wouldn’t want to exaggerate, or it can enhance features that you want to bring out. Therefore, finding the perfect spot in your home that has the right lighting can make a big difference in the impression that you make on your virtual date.

To impress your date during a live chat session, make sure that you are facing the source of the light in the room. In other words, make the lighting come from in front of you, rather than from behind you. You might try sitting in front of a window during the day when light is streaming in brightly. If you’re chatting in the evening or during the night, when you can’t take advantage of beautiful natural light from the sun, it’s a good idea to sit in front of a lamp that can create the same effect. You might have to play around with where the light is set, or where you are sitting in relation to the light source, but once you get it right, you’ll know it by seeing how fabulous you look on the screen.

Make Sure Your Background Is Clean

Yet another way to impress your date during a video chat is by making sure that you are set up in an area of your home that is clean and tidy. The last thing you want to do is get on a video chat with someone who can see the mess that is behind you, so be sure to organize your belongings, make your bed, keep your laundry in a hamper that is out of view, etc. This is such a simple step, but it can be easy to forget to do this, so take the time to clean before your video call with your date, whether you’ll be using your mobile device or your computer.

Set Your Device at Eye Level

Have you ever noticed that some people don’t look directly into their camera when they are on a Livestream on social media or when they are on FaceTime with you? Isn’t it annoying? After all, you want someone to be looking into the camera in a direct way while they are talking to you. This mimics how they would look at you in person if they were making great eye contact. So, you should aim to get your camera at eye level for your video chat with your date. It might take some time to set up, so do it in advance. That way, when it is time for your call, everything will be ready to go.

To avoid looking down at your laptop, you can set it up so that it is at eye level by simply placing it on a stack of books. If you have a tripod for your mobile phone, you can use that as well. Whatever will get the job done!

Have a Meal Together, Virtually

Consider ordering a meal to have delivered. Your date can do the same. Then, you can both enjoy your dinner together, as if you were sitting across from each other at a table in a restaurant. The only difference is that you are both in your own homes, talking to each other on a video chat. This is a great way to get the vibe of a dinner date when you can’t actually meet in person for any reason, such as when restaurants are closed to protect people from the coronavirus.

Have Fun!

Remember, a virtual date is just as important as a real date, so you should treat it as such. Don’t feel intimidated; instead, relax and have some fun. The fact that you are in a positive mood, and that you are having a good time, will certainly come through, even though you are talking to each other while you’re far apart and you’re seeing each other on a screen. Then, once you get to know one another better, you can decide if you want to take things to the next level by meeting in person. By then, you’ll be confident and comfortable, so your in-person dates will be even better!
