This tragic incident took place on March 2, 2017, when a mother threw her 9-year-old boy into the river in an attempt to drown him. Buddy, a pit bull, jumped pit bull after him and rescued the young boy.
The incident took place near Murray River in Moama, a town bordering the states of New South Wales and Victoria in Australia.
It’s safe to say the story is very disturbing. The mother is already facing charges of allegedly drowning her 5-year-old and attempting to drown her 9-year-old son.
Buddy, a pit bull from another family, was near the area and saw the little boy was trying to fight off his mother. He jumped to action and tried to drag the 9-year-old away from her. During the rescue attempt, Buddy had to bite hold the boy. When the mentally-ill woman charged at them, Buddy bit her too in order to fend her off!
The unnamed 9-year-old survived. However, his little brother did not. The survivor was treated for bite injuries at a children’s hospital in Melbourne.
Until the entire investigation is completed, the pitbull will be under the custody of the Rangers. Due to the bites, he was kept under lock and key and was possibly facing death charges.
A petition was launched to save Buddy’s life. The petition gained over 50,000 signatures! The 9-year-old’s maternal grandfather also supported the initiative.
“I own a similar dog, and I know he was trying to save the boys—it’s their nature when they are raised with kids,” he explained to the media. “Let the ones who his actions affected decide.”
Buddy’s owners said that he is a very polite dog with no history of aggression. The investigating policemen advised the Murray River Council that Buddy was reacting to “extreme circumstances,” and had likely been acting in “reasonable defense” of the child.
The New South Wales Police have advised council that they will not be seeking an order to destroy this animal,” said Murray River Council Interim General Manager, Margot Stork. “Our Rangers are passionate about animal welfare and we will always work with residents to ensure their pets are registered, micro-chipped, and provide any advice or assistance.”
Buddy was recently micro-chipped and registered. Everyone following the dog’s story came to his rescue, as all efforts to save the dog were successful in the end.
“I just want to tell everyone that our boy Buddy is coming home,” owner Jess Smith said, on the petition page. “He has a few things to get into place before he comes home, but the main thing is he is coming home.”
“I have one grandson left because this brave dog took action as required,” said the grandfather.
