For those of us with lots of hair, we know that washing your hair everyday is a real hassle. It takes a lot of time and a lot of work to maintain a healthy, strong head of hair. So if you dread having to wash your hair every day, you’re in luck. Doctors recommend washing less to keep your hair healthy and strong. Over-washing triggers oil production, and while natural oils in your scalp are healthy, constantly washing it may trigger overproduction leading to a vicious cycle.

#1 Avoid fatty foods.
Fatty foods, sugar and carbs are the culprits behind oil production. Instead, opt for natural nuts, fruits, vegetables, and lean meat for hair that’s healthy.
#2 Use dry shampoo.
Instead of choosing a shampoo that involves wetting your hair, lathering, and rinsing it, buy a good brand of dry shampoo. Just part your hair and apply the dry shampoo at the roots if it’s in a powder form. If it’s a spray, apply it on the roots of your hair from 8-10 inches away. This will keep your hair oil-free.
#3 Don’t forget hair accessories.
If you’re having a bad hair day, reach out for that hair scarf. If you have short hair, a scarf or a bandana can pep up your look and hide your oily hair. If you sport a fringe, just wash it, pin it up and let a hair scarf do the rest. Even long and loose hair can be tied up in a bun or hidden behind a head scarf. Grab those hair clips and hair bands to change your look and leave the hair washing for another day.
#4 Don’t use hot water.
To wash your hair, always use cold or warm water but never hot water. High temperatures activate the sebaceous glands in the scalp, releasing more oil. It’s also advised not to use a hair dryer to dry your hair but let it dry naturally.
#5 Braid your hair.
Another good trick to hide the grease in your hair is by braiding it. Just backcomb the hair near the crown to hide the unwashed part and you’re good to go with a braid. If you leave a few strands loose, the look will be even more carelessly complete!
#6 Comb your locks before going to bed.
It’s a good idea to give your scalp some blood circulation by combing your hair before going to bed. This will not only disentangle any knots but will also help to stimulate the hair follicles. If you have long hair, make a loose braid or a ponytail when you go to bed. For shorter hair, leave it draped over your pillow to avoid getting it entangled.
#7 Change the partings in your hair.
For a fresh, new look, change the parting in your hair. It will also prevent hair thinning from parting in the same place for too long.
#8 Don’t choose a flat hairstyle.
Getting a sleek look sometimes can mean a really flat hairstyle that doesn’t conceal the extra oil in your hair. Instead, slightly puff up or backcomb the front part of your hair and do a bun or a ponytail.
#9 Clean your hairbrush.
Use warm water and shampoo or soap to clean your hairbrush at least once a week to wash away the oil and other substances.
#10 Know the right way to wash your hair.
Never scratch your scalp with shampoo. Use your fingers to gently massage the scalp. Don’t apply conditioner to the hair roots as this will weaken them. Always wring your hair of extra water before applying conditioner on your hair, leaving the upper parts of the hair untouched. When you dry your hair, use a t-shirt instead of a towel for gentler care.
